நாராயணனே, நமக்கே பறைதருவான்,

பாரோர் புகழப் படிந்தேலோ ரெம்பாவாய்!

Nirada podhuvir, podhu mino nerizhaiyeer

Explanation:

In this month of Marghazhi,

On this day filled with the light of moon,

Come for bathing,

Oh ladies who are richly dressed,

And Oh ladies in rich homes of cowherds,

For he with the sharp spear,

He who kills his enemies without mercy,

He who is the son of Nanda gopa,

He who is the darling son of Yasodha,

Who wore scented flower garlands,

He who is a lion cub,

He who is pretty in black colour,

He who has small red eyes,

He who has a face like the well-lit moon,

And He, who is our Lord Narayana,

Is going to give us protection,

So that we bathe and that is our Pavai (Viratham or practice),

In a way that the whole world sings about.

பாடலின் பொருள் :

அழகிய அணிகலன்களை அணிந்த கன்னியரே! சிறப்பு மிக்க ஆயர்பாடியில் வசிக்கும் செல்வவளமிக்க சிறுமிகளே! மார்கழியில் முழுநிலா ஒளி வீசும் நல்ல நாள் இது. இன்று நாம் நீராடக் கிளம்புவோம். கூர்மையான வேலுடன் நம்மைப் பாதுகாத்து வரும் அரிய தொழிலைச் செய்யும் நந்தகோபன், அழகிய கண்களையுடைய யசோதாபிராட்டி ஆகியோரின் சிங்கம் போன்ற மகனும், கரிய நிறத்தவனும், சிவந்த கண்களை உடையவனும், சூரியனைப் போல் பிரகாசமான முகத்தையுடையவனும், நாராயணனின் அம்சமுமான கண்ணபிரான் நமக்கு அருள் தர காத்திருக்கிறான். அவனை நாம் பாடிப் புகழ்ந்தால் இந்த உலகமே நம்மை வாழ்த்தும் என்று கூறி தோழியரை நோன்பு நோக்க அழைக்கிறாள் ஆண்டாள். 

வேறு சில விளக்கங்கள் :

இந்த பாசுரத்தை ஆண்டாள் வைகுண்டத்தை மனதில் கொண்டு பாடுகிறாள். அதனால் தான் "நாராயணனே பறை தருவான் என்கிறாள். 108 திருப்பதிகளில் 106ஐ பூமியில் காணலாம். 107 மற்றும் 108வது திருப்பதியான வைகுண்டத்தில் தான் நாராயணன் வசிக்கிறார். நாம் செய்யும் புண்ணியத்தைப் பொறுத்தே இந்த திருப்பதியை அடைய முடியும். இந்தப் பாடலைப் பக்தியுடன் படித்து, தர்ம செயல்களை மட்டுமே செய்து வந்தால் நாமும் வைகுண்டத்தை அடைந்து பரந்தாமனுடன் கலந்து விடுவோம்.

ஆழமான விளக்கம் :

இங்கே, ஆண்டாள் மார்கழியின் தொடக்கத்தை முழு நிலவு நாளாக விவரிக்கிறார், ஏனென்றால் உலகத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து மக்களும் மகிழ்ச்சியாக வாழ வேண்டும். அதிர்ஷ்டத்தை அடைய நாம் அனைவரும் இறைவனை வழிபட வேண்டும் என்று கூறுகிறாள். எனவே பகவானின் மகிமையை விவரிக்கிறாள். இந்த மாதத்தின் மகிமையை உலகம் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறாள், இந்த மார்கழியின் முதல் நாள் , ஒருவரின் மனதில் நல்ல எண்ணங்களை நிறுத்த ஒரு சிறந்த நாள் என்று கூறுகிறாள்.

திருமணமாகாத பெண்கள் இந்த விரதத்தை மேற்கொள்ளும்போது, அவர்களுக்கு விரைவில் ஒரு நல்ல கணவர் கிடைக்கும் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அந்த காரணத்திற்காக ஆண்டாள் விரதம் இருக்கவில்லை. மாறாக, அவள் தன் கணவனாக இறைவனை வணங்கி விரதம் இருந்தாள். இங்கே, ஆண்டாள் ஜீவாத்மா, மற்றும் கிருஷ்ணர் பரமாத்மா. அவள் தன்னைப் பற்றி மட்டும் நினைக்காது, உலக மக்கள் அனைவரும் இறைவனை அடைய வேண்டும் என்று நினைக்கிறாள். எனவே, நம் அனைவரையும் தன்னுடன் சேர்ந்து மாயையான தூக்கத்திலிருந்து விடுபட அவள் அழைக்கிறாள்.

தினத்திற்கான பாடம் :

நண்பர்கள் அல்லது உறவினர்கள் அல்லது அவரது நாடு ஆபத்தில் இருக்கும்போது ஒருவர் மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருக்க முடியாது. எனவே அனைவரின் நல்வாழ்விலும் அக்கறை கொள்ளுங்கள்.அதனால்தான் ஆண்டாள் "நீராடப் போதுவீர்" என்று அழைக்கிறார், அதாவது இந்த மார்கழி விரதத்தில் தன்னுடன் சேர தனது நண்பர்களையும் அழைக்கிறார்.உங்கள் இலக்குகளை சரியாக உணர்ந்து உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை லட்சியமுடன் வாழுங்கள். உங்கள் இலக்குகளை அடைய சரியான பாதையைத் தேர்ந்தெடுங்கள்.பக்தி இல்லாதிருந்தால், நம்முடைய எல்லா செயல்களும் சரியாக முடிவடையது. எனவே, அனைவரும் இறைவனின் நாமத்தை உச்சரித்து, சரியான பாதையில் கவனம் செலுத்துவோம்.

Thiruppavai song 1 - Margazhi Thingal

Word Meaning :     

Margazhi  thingal – month of marghazhi;

madhi niraindha nannalal – auspicious full moon day;

Nirada podhuvir – those interested to bathe in the divine experience;

podhu mino - please come;

nerizhaiyeer – bejeweled maidens;

Seermalgum – prosperous;

aayppadi – Ayarpadi in Gokula;

chelva chirumeergal -those blessed with youth and wealth (of relation with Krishna);

Koorvel – one with a sharp spear;

kodunthozhilan - cruel in action(towards small organisms that try to harm Krishna);

nandagopan kumaran - son of that nandagopa;

Erarndha kannni yasodhai – love-filled beautiful eyed yesodha;

ilan singam  – like a young lion;

Kar – cloud-hued;

meni – divine body;

chengann - red-eyed;

kadir madiyam pol mugathan - face like sun and moon;

Narayanane – (the king of universe) narayana Himself;

namakke – (His subordinates) for us;

parai – our goal/aspiration;

tharuvan – will grant.

Paror – those in this world;

pugazha – celebrate/praise;

padinthe – undertake this vow;

empavai – as per our vow;

Meaning of the song :

Here, Andal calls all the young girls wearing beautiful costumes, who live in the prosperous Ayarpadi and explains the importance of margazhi and the glory of Lord Krishna. She tells the girls that on this full moon day, let us all bathe and get ready to worship Lord Krishna, who is the young lion cub like son of Nandagopan and Yashoda. She adds that Lord Krishna, who is dark-skinned, red-eyed, and whose face is as radiant as the sun, whose father Nandagopan wields sharp spear to protect his son from kamsa ,is waiting to bless us all. So, she explains to the girls that if we sing in praise of the lord, the world itself will greet us , thereby inviting all the young girls to perform fasting along with her in the name of the supreme lord.

Some other explanations :

Andal sings this hymn, with Lord Vaikunta in mind. That is why she says "Naarayananae namakkae parai tharuvaan". Out of 108 Divya Desam,106 Divya Desams can be found on Earth. The rest, 107 and 108, can be found in Vaikuntha Thirupathi or Vaikuntam (Heaven), which is where Lord Narayanan lives. Reaching there depends on the good deeds we do. If we recite this song with devotion and follow dharma, we can also reach Vaikunta Thirupathi or Vaikuntam and join our Lord Paranthaman (Another name for Lord Vishnu).

In-depth Explanation :

Here, Andal describes the beginning of Margazhi as a full moon day because people from all over the world should live happily. She says that we all must worship the Lord to achieve good fortune and hence, describes the glories of Bhagavan. She wants the world to know the glory of this month and says that this first day of margazhi is a great day to fill one's mind with good thoughts.

When unmarried women take up this fasting, it is believed that they will have a good husband soon. But Andal did not fast for that reason. Instead, she worshipped the Lord as her husband and fasted. Here, Andal is a pure soul, and Krishna is the supreme soul. She not only thinks about herself, but thinks that all the people of the world should reach the Lord. Hence, she invites all of us to join her and get rid of our delusional sleep.

Lesson of the day :

One cannot be happy when his friends and relatives or his country is in danger. So care for the well being of one and all.That is why Andal calls “Nirada podhuvir” i.e. inviting her friends also to join with her in this Maargazhi Viratham. Live an ambitious life by realizing your goals properly. Choose the right path to achieve your goals. Aspire for the well-being of the body, mind, and soul and pray for the same to the almighty. All our activities, if devoid of devotion, cannot yield the right or required results. So, let's all chant the lord's name and focus on the right path.

It could be your marriage, a good life, or could also be anything relating to your career, studies, or health. You can dream of someone else's well-being.

Remember that the key point of this fasting, according to Andal, is to reach the Lord, who is always around us. Always help yourself and everyone around you.
