Thiruppavai

Thiruppavai is a set of 30 Tamil songs(paasurams) written in praise of Thirumaal (manifestation of Lord Vishnu) by the female Tamil poet-saint Andal. She is considered the manifestation of Bhudevi, who has come down to earth as Periyalvar's daughter. These 30 songs contain the cardinal principles of Vaishnava dharma during the month of Marghazhi (mid-December to mid-January). Devotees sing these songs to bring peace, prosperity, and Divine Grace.

Pavai Nonbu is usually taken up by young girls during this month, for a good married life. But anyone can take up this fasting.

The key point of this viratham ,according to Andal ,is to reach the Lord who is always around us. We can take up this viratham for any reason like career or studies or health. All that one has to do is believe the lord and worship him with all your love.

Story of Andal

Periyalvar(பெரியாழ்வார்) was an ardent devotee of Perumal. He strings garland to god every day. He was childless. So he prayed to God for a child. One day, he found a girl child under the Tulasi plant in a garden inside the temple. The child was Goddess Bhudevi herself. He named the child Kothai, who grew up as a devotee of Lord Krishna( incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Even as a child, Godai made up her mind to marry the Lord of Brindavana.

She adorns herself daily with the flower garland that her father prepared for the Lord at the temple. After admiring her reflection and thinking of herself as His ideal bride, she would put the garland back for her father to take to the temple and offer to the Lord. One day, Periyalvar noticed a strand of Kodai's hair on one of the garlands. Shocked and saddened by this desecration of what was meant for the Lord only, he scolded Kodai for her misuse of the garland and discarded it. He then carefully prepared a new one and offered it to the Lord, begging his pardon all the while. That night, Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and asked him to dedicate only the garland worn by Andal to him. With a lot of emotions, he then woke up and cried tears of both joy and remorse. It dawned on him that his daughter was someone whose love of God was so intense and pure that even he had not comprehended its extent. Her spiritual greatness was such that the Lord Himself wished to share her presence. From this day on, she became known as "Andal", meaning the girl who "ruled" over the Lord. At the age of 15, Ranganatha of Ranganathaswamy temple married Andal, who later merged with the idol.

Basic do's during margazhi and their reasons

Margazhi being the most auspicious month of the year, there are certain things everyone needs to follow for good fortune ( any gender, even if the person is not taking up the viratham, can follow)

  • Wake up early at 4 a.m., get ready, light a lamp (one outside the house and one inside our house, and another one near our tulsi plant)

Reason :

1)The light that comes from the lamp is a symbol of knowledge as it leads from darkness to light. They also eliminate all the negative energy in our house.

2)During the month of margazhi, Since it is the coldest, the rays of the sun, fall on the Earth a little late. Hence, unlike other months, it would still be darker even in the mornings, which is why people light lamps in the morning.

  • Light lamps both in the morning and evening.
  • Draw beautiful kolams at the entrance of our homes

Reason: Kolam is drawn to welcome the goddess of fortune and wealth or positive energy, that is to welcome the good and send away the evil.

  • Clean our homes and pooja room neatly to sing thiruppavai song for that day.
  • Each song must be sung 3 times. People following this viratham (fasting) will sing only that song that is mentioned for the day,3 times. People who are not participating in the viratham can follow the same or can even sing all the 30 songs once or listen to others singing.
  • Avoid Non-vegetarian foods.

Pavai Nonbu

It is believed that young girls take up this nonbu to get a good, loving husband, the way Andal followed to marry the lord himself. The period just before the ensuing dawn is called Bramhamuhurtham (4 A.M - 6 A.M). It is an auspicious time, for it gives good thoughts and intentions. At this time, the young girls get ready ,decorate their house entrance with beautiful powder art (kolam) and recite a verse every day before 6 AM and follow the instructions as specified in each song for that day. Usually, dairy products are given up.Non-vegetarian food MUST be avaoided.
